The foundation for all water use, non-consumptive and consumptive, is water quality. The pages featured here, Salinity Control and Selenium Management, highlight two issues that dominate the Gunnison River Basin, however other’s can and do exist.

Surface-water-quality data were compiled for sites in the upper Gunnison River watershed. Most values of surface-water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH were within Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) in-stream standards.

The upper reaches of the North Fork of the Gunnison River have been an area of active coal mining for many years. Recently, concerns about impacts of coal mining on surface-water quality have been raised. To answer these concerns, information on existing, or background, water quality must be known.
